Markets During War: What History Tells Us

When there’s tension at the border or a national crisis, it’s natural to feel uncertain about the stock market. Emotions run high, news cycles become intense, and many investors worry about their portfolios. But history tells us something reassuring—Indian markets have shown resilience during times of conflict.

Let’s look at what actually happened during some of India’s major past conflicts:

Thu May 8, 2025

1. Kargil War (1999)
The Nifty initially declined due to the uncertainty. But remarkably, in just one month, it bounced back with a strong 16.5% gain.

2. 26/11 Mumbai Attack (2008)
Despite the shock and gravity of the situation, the market held steady. In fact, it moved up nearly 4% the following month.

3. Pulwama & Balakot Strikes (2019)
A period of heightened tension. Still, in the month that followed, the Nifty delivered a solid 6.3% return.

The Overall Pattern
Across five major India-Pakistan conflicts, the Nifty has averaged a 4.7% gain in the month following each event. That’s a strong signal that markets tend to recover swiftly after initial jitters.

The Exceptions
Yes, there were two events that bucked the trend:
a. Parliament Attack (2001): Market dipped by 0.8%
b. Uri Attack (2016): Market slipped by 1.2%
But even these dips were relatively mild and short-lived.

Bottom Line
The market doesn’t like uncertainty—but it respects fundamentals. And history shows that Indian markets have often rebounded quickly after crises. So, during tough times, instead of panicking, it may be wise to stay calm, stay invested, and focus on the bigger picture.
